Grounds for Appeal Are Limited to Errors in Fact and Law
Appeals are Not New Trials
The purpose of a family law appeal is to prove that an error occurred in your initial case and request that the decision be reversed. They are not a forum for presenting new evidence, but rather reviewing the facts of the initial case.
Appeals Correct Reversible Error
If the appellate judge determines an error occurred, such as the admission of prejudicial evidence or an incorrect ruling, they can overturn the previous decision.
You Have a Limited Time to File
For most types of cases, you only have 45 days to request an appeal to a final judgment of the court. For final judgments terminating parental rights, you only have 21 days to appeal the decision.
