Anytime you try to persuade someone to believe in your cause or in the realm of law, your case, you need to know your audience. In family court, the audience is the Judge that hears your case, not the jury. Knowing about the Judge and practicing before him or her is very important as to what could be helpful in an argument and what will not be useful. This is very important. While the New Jersey Court Rules and Statutes govern what guides a divorce or family court Judge, each Judge is very different, how they make decisions varies. The more often your attorney is before certain judges, the better your lawyer can craft a persuasive argument for your case. Whether you are seeking a divorce, an annulment, sole custody, joint custody, domestic violence and restraining order defense, college contributions, a final restraining order, alimony, parenting time, initial child support application, modification of a court order, modification of NJ-child support, etc., the more you know and the more often you appear before the Judge, the better off you are. If you have a family law issue or a divorce, contact us first, we can help you. 201-706-7910

Bergen County and Essex County Child Custody and Child Support Lawyers

While the assignment of Judges does change every September, many Judges do remain in the same division each year. We stay on top of which Judges stay and which Judges are added each year. For example, in 2015 Judge David Katz was named the presiding Judge of the Essex County Family Court replacing Judge Floria. Judge Katz spent a considerable amount of time on domestic violence cases. Judge Nancy Sivilli, Judge Michael Casale still remain on the Essex County Divorce Court bench with several years of experience. Judge Donald Kessler unfortunately was moved to the Civil Division after many years in family court looking for the interests of children.

All of the family law judges in Essex County Superior Court are:

DAVID B. KATZ – PJ,  JEFFREY B. BEACHAM,  STEPHEN J. BERNSTEIN (Children in Court-DFYS) MICHAEL R. CASALE (Divorce and Post Divorce), LINDA LORDI CAVANAUGH, WAYNE J. FORREST (FD Applications) MICHAEL C. GAUS (Domestic Violence), NEIL N. JASEY, BRUCE J. KAPLAN MARYSOL ROSERO NANCY SIVILLI (Divorce and Post Divorce) CATHY L. WASSERMAN,  DAVID J. WEAVER, MARCELLA MATOS WILSON, JAMES PAGANELLI

Judge Neil Jasey is a newer judge in the Essex County Family Court where the Honorable Donald Kessler (212 Washington Street, Newark, NJ-13th Floor) used to hear cases of the same nature: child support, parenting time, child custody, modification of court orders, new custody and child support applications. Judge Jasey is a very patient Judge who carefully reads the papers submitted to him and encourages parties/attorneys to try and resolve their issues without judicial intervention.

Judge James Paganelli is also a newer judge that decides final restraining order hearings for Essex County. The Artusa Law Firm team has successfully defended restraining order cases before Judge Paganelli.

Judge Nancy Sivilli is one off the more experienced family court judges in Essex County and the State of New Jersey. Judge Sivilli is very professional and takes her time in rendering decisions. On some occasions, Judge Sivilli will provide a preliminary decision on the Thursday before motion day so that the parties can determine if they still want to have oral argument on that Friday which we find very useful to lawyers and litigants. We have represented individuals before Judge Sivilli in family court motions, restraining order hearings, divorce cases and more.
